STMicroelectronics MCU shortage did not improve in the first half of the year

2025-04-30209
At the beginning of this year, NXP, the leading automotive electronic chip company, announced a global increase in microcontroller chip prices, announcing that it would raise prices for multiple product lines starting from the previous quarter. Among them, MCU prices were raised by 6%, and the market expected a shortage for a whole year.

Since 2017, many MCU manufacturers worldwide have extended their product delivery times by six months from four months, with Japanese MCU manufacturers experiencing a rare extension of up to nine months. According to Taiwanese media reports, STMicroelectronics reported a significant increase in demand for automotive electronics in the second half of last year, resulting in severe product shortages. Other IDM factories such as DeYi, Renesas, and NXP also experienced the same situation, with delivery delays of three months and six months. Many downstream customers switched to single machine factories, benefiting companies such as New Tang.

STMicroelectronics' out of stock products include 8-bit MCUs, Cortex M0/M3/M4, and other products with extended lead times. The situation in the first quarter of this year has not improved, and the industry believes that it will be difficult to improve in the first half of this year. In addition, Taiwanese media pointed out that in 2018, Apple's new iPhone will fully introduce 3D sensing, and STMicroelectronics is one of the few suppliers and IDM factories, which will inevitably continue to squeeze out MCU production capacity.

According to market semiconductor intelligence data, the global electronic product manufacturing industry was mostly thriving last year, with even Japanese semiconductor factories experiencing years of no positive growth and prosperity, driving up sales of electronic components such as IC chips. It is estimated that the global demand for automotive electronics and IoT applications will continue to explode and grow in the future, and with the full capacity of silicon wafer fabs, the global MCU market is likely to face supply shortages for the entire year of 2018.

IHS Markit analyst Liu Qing stated that some manufacturers and upstream Fabs (manufacturing plants) have started to increase their product supply capacity in the second half of 2017, but it still takes two or three quarters to release these new production capacities. Therefore, it is expected that the tight supply situation will continue until the first half of 2018.
